Okay,
So I finally caught up with the rest of the world and had my chance to watch Avatar. Didn't see it on the big screen, but I've always thought, if I can't have the same experience with my 3k worth of entertainment equipment, then it isn't worth wasting time.
I'll admit the visuals were pretty cool, kept my attention, and the story started out pretty good as well. My only complaint is this, why are all the Box Office hits the last 10 years always got ya for the first half, guessing what is next and always having 2 or 3 ideas as to what might happen and then the last half I'm wondering where the hell my lighter is so I can have another smoke?
It was like a cross between Dances with Wolves, the new Star Trek movie and a really detailed Shrek 3. The details were great which I think is what was supposed to make up for the predictable ending. Seriously, did anyone else notice how small they made Sam Worthington's legs to make the fact he has been in a wheel chair so long seem more realistic? Yes, this is what I noticed, but seriously, not bad details. And no, those of you that know me, I didn't just notice that because I always seem to check out a pair of legs in shorts. ;-)
But the fact still remains that the second half was way predictable. I mean come on, don't tell me that none of you saw the whole swap bodies thing coming in the end!?! Why not kill him off? I mean, he can still save them in the end, but why not die in the mobile trailer thing? He saved the day. Teach these folks about anger and that it isn't always a happy ending. The good guy saves ya, but now the love of your life is dead... use that anger and blow the crap out of the rest of the humans. Job done, case closed, it's a win for all of Pandora. Then you leave yourself open for Avatar 2: The Humans Come Back to Kick Your Sorry Asses.
Anyway, overall, not bad. I'm not a movie critic so I don't try to say I am, but why is it that we keep going overboard with the special effects. Some of the best movies of all times have had little to no special effects. A good story and real actors are all you need in the long run. Oh well, all I can say is I'm glad I didn't spend 14 bucks to go see it in the theater as I would be pissed off that I had to pee the last 40 minutes due to the excessive gulps on my $20-400oz free-refills but no one ever gets one Dr. Pepper.
Hope this helps detour anyone from spending big bucks seeing this film if you have not already seen it. Just wait for your friends to buy the over-priced collectors edition with 9 hours of deleted scenes and enjoy it over a pizza that will totally seem more worth the money spent in the end. ;-)
